Advising
Art Advising
The Department of Art Coordinator of Advising works with current and prospective Art majors/minors and other students enrolled in Art courses at the University. The adviser is available to assist with the following:
- Completing major and minor program forms
- Planning major course of study (sophomores and juniors)
- Development of Individually Designed Interdepartmental Major (IDIM), Inter-College Program (ICP), or Bachelor of Individualized Studies (BIS) degrees
- Answering questions about transfer credits, internships, the Honors Program, Adult Special status, study abroad, and other special learning opportunities as they relate to the major
- Helping seniors check that all major requirements are completed
- Career planning and graduate program advising
- Referrals to appropriate resources
If you are considering a major or minor in Art, we urge you to consult the adviser as soon as possible. Transfer students from accredited institutions should meet with the adviser promptly to determine what transfer work can count toward an Art program. Doing so will prevent you from taking unnecessary courses.
The Advising Office is located next to the Main Office in E223 Regis Center for Art. Office hours are 9:00-3:00, Monday through Thursday. During semester breaks and summer sessions, office hours will be posted.

Registering For Classes
Because of their small size, Art classes fill quickly. If you encounter difficulty getting into Art courses, we suggest the following:
- Art majors should fill out a major program in the Art Advising Office and file a copy at their college advising office to ensure their major status. Some seats in Art courses are reserved for officially declared Art majors.
- At registration, make certain to place yourself on the waitlist, if available and/or attend the first class meeting. Students who do not attend the first class meeting forfeit enrollment in the course. If you receive permission to enroll after speaking with the instructor, he or she must give you a "permission number."
In addition, speak with the instructor or the adviser BEFORE the first class session if you have concerns as to whether you meet the stated prerequisites for a specific course. If you do not possess the minimal background required, an instructor may refuse to let you take the class. Also remember that you may cancel or add classes within the first two weeks of classes. Grade base changes from A/F to S/N and vice versa can be made within the first two weeks of the term. Courses may be cancelled, by students, through the eighth week of the term. Course additions and grade base changes after the first two weeks must be petitioned through your college office.
Instant Access and Registration
You can check your record and obtain a wide variety of other information on the University of Minnesota website http://onestop.umn.edu. Web access includes self-enrollment, class schedules, financial aid, transcripts of all courses on your record, and more.
For in-person registration:
- Student Service Centers
- 130 Skyway, West Bank or 200 Fraser Hall, East Bank.
Grading Concerns
The Department of Art follows the College of Liberal Arts grading policies. Direct questions regarding special credits, grading standards, incompletes, scholastic misconduct, and A/F and S/N grade policies to your college advising office. Only letter grades of A, B, and C (+/-) can fulfill major requirements, with three exceptions: the Major Project, Internships in the Arts, and the BFA exhibition. Grades of S must be obtained in these courses.
Incomplete Grade Policy
An incomplete grade in a course taken on the A/F grade base will lapse to an "F" if not made up within your next semester of registration. (An incomplete in an S/N course will change to an N). Assigning an incomplete is always at the instructor’s discretion. Don’t assume an "I" will be given if you have not previously arranged it with the instructor. The instructor may set dates and conditions for make-up work, if it is allowed.
