Scholarships
All currently enrolled Art majors are eligible to compete for scholarships that support continuing studies at the University of Minnesota. Declared Art majors are informed of scholarship information and deadlines by email. Considerations for awarding scholarships are the quality of artwork and academic excellence as determined by the Scholarship Committee of the Department of Art.
Scholarships are awarded in the spring and all recipients participate in the yearly Scholarship Exhibition in the Regis Center for Art.
Career Development/ Internship Opportunities
The first step in career planning is to gain an understanding and appreciation for your liberal arts degree. For some students, the BA or BFA degree might serve as the basis of a career as a professional artist, but for most students the degree will serve as recognition of their insights into the creative process and knowledge of the skills used in creating visual art. The insights and abilities you acquire while making art, plus the conceptual abilities and the analytical skills you develop in your liberal arts coursework, all combine to prepare you for a world that requires both perspective and flexibility. It is important to remember that an education in the liberal arts is not training in a specific vocation, but rather a broad-based education that prepares you for a number of employment options or graduate study in a range of fields.
Art majors have gone on to work in museums and galleries, write for art periodicals and publications, own and manage art-related businesses, work for arts organizations, produce video and television, etc. Others have continued their educations in order to gain qualifications needed to teach in the public school system or at the college level. Begin early, as your investigation of resources will help you get started on career planning.
Internships are an excellent opportunity to broaden knowledge, gain employment experience and receive credit in your major field. A variety of internship possibilities in local arts organizations exist. Consult the Department of Art Coordinator of Advising or the Career and Community Learning Center for listings and more information. The Department of Art offers an internship at the Katherine E. Nash Gallery each fall, spring and summer term. Students register for ArtS 3499 with permission of the Director of the Nash Gallery, Nicholas Shank.
