Acquiecse

Kasey Miklik

I came to sculpture and book arts through a side door. I started as a writer and theater technician, which lends an unusual voice and aesthetic to my work. Due to this background, many of my influences come from outside of the visual arts world. I find a lot of inspiration from literature, theater, and popular culture. I have been strongly influenced by the works of Kurt Vonnegut, Stephan Sondheim, Neil Gaiman, and Sherman Alexie. In the visual arts, my work has been affected by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, particularly by the works of Paul Cezanne and George Seurat. Dadaism and Fluxus have been important influences for me as well. My strongest sources of motivation and inspiration, however, stem from my own history as a prematurely born, Queer, Midwesterner.

I am interested in the intersections and expectations of identities and social roles. I push up against binaries and attempt to question and redefine assumptions. Within this friction, my work explores the role of personal histories and identities as they are exposed to the outside world. Reflecting internal narratives and private moments that have been forced into a public framework is an important element of my work. Through the use of clear containers, text reminiscent of diary entries, and peepholes looking into unexpected places, I expose small interactions that raise questions of boundaries and participation, both consensual and nonconsensual.
